Maha Shivratri
Maha Shivratri, that is a festival of fasting and worship, celebrated in the dark lunar night days of Phalgun or Magh, signifies one of the most important and propitious times in the Hindu calendar for the spiritual and religious witnessing of Lord Shiva who acknowledges his part as the supreme cosmic consciousness and the spring of all spiritual knowledge, power, and emancipation from the cycle of birth and death. Vedic astrology considers Maha Shivratri momentous as it is the darkest night of the lunar month, thus a very cosmic window for all the above-mentioned activities and also for connecting with the absolute consciousness that Lord Shiva represents. The festival is a remembrance of the universal marriage and cosmic dance of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, thus representing the ideal of perfect harmony between the divine masculine and feminine and the endless cycle of creation and destruction that keeps the universe alive through the processes of manifestation and dissolution that observe stillness and cosmic principles. Vedic astrology directs that Maha Shivratri is the night most fitting for Shiva puja, profound meditation, chanting of sacred mantras, and engaging in spiritual practices that raise consciousness, cleanse the mind and emotions, and bring us closer to moksha or liberation from the restricting cycle of rebirth that ties all creatures to the wheel of karma and samsara. Maha Shivratri at night is a time where the negative influences of the diƯicult planets such as Rahu, Ketu, and Saturn are wiped out and the night is a perfect opportunity for the worshippers to get deep healing and karmic cleansing when they come to God with pure devotion and with a sincere desire for spiritual transformation and enlightenment on this night of the spiritual calendar which is the most auspicious. Lord Shiva, who is the Adi Yogi or the first yogi, is the personification of meditation, knowledge, spiritual enlightenment, and cosmic wisdom and worshipping Him on this night brings mental peace, reduces anxiety and emotional turbulence, and awakens our inner wisdom and divine potential that is held dormant within every human being waiting to be discovered and cultivated. The vedic astrology significance of Maha Shivratri covers a wide range of powerful spiritual and material blessings enabling a person to be free from fear and anxiety and to be able to face life's diƯiculties while keeping a sense of balance, inner peace, and a strong connection with divine truth that transcends all changes and individual problems. Worshippers are awake the whole night long and involve themselves in kirtan (devotional singing), meditation, introspection, and Lord Shiva’s worship which allows the uplifted cosmic energies of this holy night to transform their minds, direct them to divine will, and also make it easier for them to undergo mystical experiences and receive spiritual breakthroughs which will speed up their evolution towards higher states of consciousness and being closer to the divine reality that is their true and eternal nature.
