Dashkriya Vidhi, the defined 10th day death ritual in Hinduism, is so mighty that it completely

obliterates the earthly attachments of the dead and facilitates their ascent to divine realms

through the divine rituals of ekodishta shraddha, dasha vidhi homa, and pind pradhan, thus

placing it as not only the last Dashkriya ceremony but also the one for the purification of

families and the elevation of their deceased souls. The mythological Garuda Purana and

Smriti shastras are the main sources of the ten-day Dashkriya process, which precisely

incites the atma from the restless preta state to the blessed pitru swaroopa where it is not

possible to keep the Hindu families who practice the Dashkarm traditions in sorrow. The

procedure is done through a ritual observance, under the guidance of a pandit, and its

benefits are felt in terms of profound peace, prohibition of ancestral curse, and divine grace

of ancestors making it the most important 10th day ritual for moksha prapti and sanctity of

the lineage. The numerous testimonies of miraculous peace attaining after Dashkriya

shraddh, ranging from the healing of family disputes to the upsurge of fortunes, testify to the

divine influence and the role of Dashkriya as a heavenly way to the kalyan of pitru and the union with

Meaning and significance

The deep significance of Dashkriya Vidhi reveals itself in its powerful symbolism, with "Dash"

denoting the tenth primary rite that occurs after death, ceremonially separating the jiva from

prithvi bondage through pind daan and tarpan. This symbolizes the jiva’s elevation from preta

bhav to pitru lok, granting moksha marg and the family’s pun. In the importance of Dashkriya,

ekodishta shraddha on the 10th day evokes Yama's grace through sesame til, kush, and

barley porridge, thus balancing the five elements to neutralize sanchita karma, lessen pitru

dosha, and direct the forefathers' kind look toward the family for children’s well-being. Each

of the five elements in Dashkriya ritual is loaded with deep meaning: rice pindas strengthen

the subtle body, Gangajal removes impurities from the aura, and black til protects from

having to take birth in hell; while brahmin daan increases the merit of the person receiving it

and hence the merit of the three generations of the family. And this is how Dashkriya Vidhi

becomes a cosmic purifier that transforms suƯering into peace, merging the two opposites,

dukh and shanti. Shastras endorse 10th-day living for eliminating marana dosha, granting

the boon of demographic growth, and bestowing the goddess of wealth on the household,

while on the metaphysical plane, it activates pitru shraddha, demonic and ghostly

obstructions, and reveals the identity of atma with brahman. Therefore, the eternal value of

Dashkriya makes it possible for karta and sutas to observe dharma, bathe in the pitru-pitri

love with rapturous bhakti and enlightened ancestors’ hearts.

When to perform and why

Vedic texts prescribe the performance of Dashkriya Vidhi by the closely related bereaved

people on the 10th day after death, preferably during Apara Paksha or Pitru Paksha if it so

happens, when lunar forces are at their peak and Pitru Tarpan is most eƯective; thus, winning

the benefits of Dashkriya like correct Atma Gati and Parivar Kalyan passing over to the family

in a heavenly way. Why, then, exalt madhyahna apara kaal for Dashkriya? This midday period,

which coincides with the sun’s (suryah) merging with the ancestors (pitru), is the best in

defeating the fears of time of death (kaal mrityu bhay), ancestral curses (shaapa) and ghostly

hindrances (preta badha), as the Puranic rites lead mourning families to this favorable 10th

day shraddh for quick shanti prapti. Inscriptions on the months of Pitru Paksha Dashami or

Trayodashi extension, the Dashkriya ceremony takes the top place of an apurva juncture,

where akhanda anushtan interfused with pind daan vows of papa prakshan, santati

anugraha, and dosha nashak veerya, thus, dharma palakas being compelled to use it for

sarvatra sampurna. The compelling reasons for performing Dashkriya Vidhi include the fact

that it is a cure for various astrological problems, such as the malefic influence of Shani on

one's ancestors' sight, especially for Tula and Vrischika lagnas, and at the same time

permitting the practitioners to experience the benefits of pitru sakshatkar in the areas of

business development, family growth, and establishment of righteousness through

coherence of virtues and their divine support. Basically, performing Dashkriya within the

antya sanskar sequence invokes Yamraj's grace, transforming the ocean of grief into atemple of wondrous peace and inexhaustible merit.

Preparations and puja vidhi

The preparation for the Dashkriya Vidhi is rigorous purifying, starting with bathing in Ganga

water, covered with pure clothes and wearing yajnopavita, purifying vedika with cow urine,

placing the pot with mango leaves and kush mirror, til barley mandala, and the photo of the

deceased to trigger the Dashkriya ritual mahavibrations. The main items for Dashkriya

consist of the pinda components—rice, sesame, sorghum flour, ghee—reinforced with white

sesame seeds, darbh grass, Ganga water, copper pot, light with sesame oil, flowers, sandal,

kumkum, betel nut and leaf with coins, food thali for the Brahmin with pure vegetarian anna,

godaan cloth-utensils, and ashes immersion pot if any remains. Spiritual purification of the

soul is the most important aspect, declaring the intention with the clan name-date-identity

of the deceased and the wish for the ancestors' well-being, invoking Ganesha-Yamraj-

Ashtadikpala to create the unstoppable Dashkriya Vidhi srotas.

The Dashkriya Vidhi starts with achaman pranayama, lighting the deepak to remove tamas

followed by Ganapati stuti and pitru tarpan path for ashirvada, covering the mandap with

pitru light. Go to pind sthapana over yava asana, giving padya achamaniya snana with til jal,

shringara chandan pushpa dhupa amidst ''Om Pitribhyo Namah'' anusandhan and the

darshana of the departed swaroopa. The peak of the Dashkriya puja is marked with the

graduated pind daan—pratham shir pind, dwitiya hast pind, tritiya vak pind—oƯered

meticulously with trikush til jal by the karta facing dakshin, synchronized to ekodishta

mantras by the pandit, creating a shanti flow that captivates the kul devta. After the pind

pradhan, perform dasha vidhi homa oƯering with ghee, brahman bhojan with naivedya kheer

daliya, and mangalarati with camphor, parikrama chanting pitru stotra for preta-pitru

parivartan. Finish the Dashkriya ceremony with asthi visarjan in holy nadi, godaan daan,

kumkum tilak prasada, and pitru shanti path that seals moksha dwara, giving the parivar

param shanti, eternally grateful to pitru prasada.
