Udak Shanti Puja is a very old and divine Vedic rite in Hinduism that is based on the cleansing
property of water. The definition of "Udak" is water, and "Shanti" is peace. The pooja purifies
the atmosphere, blots out the dark forces, and appeals to the Almighty for blessings to bring
peace, love, and wealth not only to the worshippers but also to the places where they live. It
is considered a very strong ritual that can spiritually wash the mind, the body, and the place
and is very helpful for the good moods and wellness of the daily life and for the important life
events when the atmosphere is already auspicious and positive.
From the Vedic tradition comes this holy ritual, where water is considered the divine element
representing purity, and renewal, and it even has the quality of prana, the life force, that could
dissolve karmas or impurities and negative energies that have been accumulated over ages.
The Udak Shanti ceremony, blessed water, mantras, and offerings together, invites the gods
to come and help the five elements, especially Apas (water), which then surrounds the body
with protection from doshas, the evil eye, and conflict coming from nature. It is a very
powerful practice, particularly for major and difficult changes such as marriage, starting a

Udak Shanti Puja is a traditional ritual to be performed well in advance of significant events such as marriages, housewarming (Griha Pravesh), and other similar events, along with major religious festivals like Ugadi or Gudi Padwa which are the ushering in of the Hindu New Year. It can also be done yearly or whenever the house or office needs a purification of energy and a wellness restoration for the family. The puja is particularly crucial in providing the household with a refuge from evil spirits and negative powers, as well as being a disturbance for the good alliance between family members. Performing Udak Shanti is supposed to result in a peaceful neighborhood where the chosen conditions for getting the spiritual, material, and interpersonal benefits of growth and coexistence are met. The puja performed at auspicious times such as Full Moons, Ekadashi, or Mondays with good Moon and Venus transits in Jyotish boosts the water's power of purification to get rid of the karmic residues. The pooja begins with the purification and sanctification of the worship place and continues with the installation of the altar with the sacred kalash (pot) filled with purified water, mango or betel leaves, and a coconut on top, representing life, abundance, and God's presence. The priest or head of the family does sankalp (intention declaration) asking for the different gods to bless them. The water is charged by the singing of mighty Vedic mantras and hymns addressed to Lord Varuna (the water god), Lord Brahma, and other heavenly beings, thus inviting them to the kalash and the surrounding area. The ceremony usually consists of offering of flowers, burning of incense, lighting of lamps (diya), and giving of food (naivedyam) to the gods and the embodiments of the elements. The holy water is then sprinkled on family members, guests, and every part of the premises in a respectful manner to purify the space and minds of all people present. It is believed that this sprinkling cleanses the impurities, heals negative karma, and brings in divine peace. The length of the puja is different each time, but it usually lasts a few hours and ends with the distribution of prasad (blessed food) that takes the sanctity of the ritual into the everyday lives of people. Udak Shanti Puja is a spiritual cleansing ritual, but at the same time it is a nurturing ritual that brings human energies in tune with the cosmic ones.
